In recent years, as more research has been directed to math intervention, a consensus has started to emerge about the most critical concepts and skills that are necessary for a solid foundation in math in the early grades.

These most critical core concepts of number and basic operations are the focus of iLearn Math Foundations. These include topics labeled "number sense" (e.g., Gersten & Chard, 1999; Clarke & Shinn, 2004; Jordan, N. C, Clutting J., & Ramineni, C., 2010.). These core concepts and skills also include learning the basic facts (using strategies rather than rote memorization), which is also critical to success in math.

The topics covered in Math Foundations includes the following:

  • Number identification and naming
  • Counting some of a group
  • Place value concepts
  • Extensive practice with addition and subtraction facts to achieve accuracy (untimed)
  • Addition and subtraction of two digit numbers, with and without regrouping
  • Extensive practice with multiplication and facts to achieve accuracy (untimed)
  • Count all of a group
  • Strategic counting
  • Strategies for learning the basic addition and subtraction facts
  • Fluency practice with addition and subtraction (timed)
  • Strategies for learning the basic multiplication and division facts
  • Fluency practice with basic multiplication and division facts (timed)

In iLearn Math Foundations, all of these topics are addressed. However, they are not taught in isolation. They are developed in an integrated sequence that blends together the concepts and procedures across the topics. That's one of the most important features of effective, explicit, systematic instruction.

In addition, throughout the progression of Chapters and Lessons on these topics, multiple practice sessions are interwoven to contribute to understanding and build retention.

  • Initial practice to confirm understanding or detect the need for instruction
  • Mixed practice that integrated the content of the current lesson plus prior lessons
  • Selective Review when a Chapter Mastery Test is failed that covers items answered incorrectly
  • Adaptive practice that provides as much practice as needed for each student to reach mastery
  • Chapter practice that includes items from all lessons in the Chapter
  • Cumulative Review scheduled after completing each Chapter Mastery Test to promote long-term retention
